It’s something I forget when I’m in the middle of a first draft or while I’m doing revisions. Starting a story is just hard.
Even with one like this, where I know the characters, the plot, the milieu, it’s still hard to find a way to just get into the story in the first place. Once you get passed that, there’s still the problem of building up momentum.
I started MAGIC’S FOOL (Working Title) on Wednesday. I’ve got all of about 2500 words written.
Part of it is probably getting my head into the right place. Turning off the infernal internal editor that’s been allowed to run rampant during the last couple of months is undoubtedly a factor. Another part is getting into the voice and mood for this story.
Well, at least it’s only likely to get better from here.
I find that for me it depends. I just started a novel–mostly to get it out of my head even though I need a new one–and it’s been hard and easy. The easy part is that I know what I want for this scene and some of the backstory– the how and why he is in this situation and who he is.
But the hard part is trying to get around not using passive verbs and such.
Sometimes I write an opening– usually for a story– and it takes me twenty tries to get what I see in my mind onto the paper. I just can’t twist words around to say what I want. That has nothing to do with passive or active verbs etc., it has to do with being able to say something right.
Other times though it flows easy no problems, no worries. 🙂 My inner critic can act up at times but so far I don’t see a pattern of when it decides to come out and play. When it does, sometimes I can ignore it but other times I spend too much time trying to placate it.
The joys of being a writer. 🙂

Yeah. Some of it is definitely the internal editor. I’ve been doing revisions for a couple of months now, so the editor is used to being allowed to work. I’ve got to stuff it back in its box.
Part is also probably just trying to get MAGE STORM (my last revision) out of my head so I can really immerse myself in this one. Hard to do when I’m still working on the query and synopsis for MAGE STORM.
