I’ve gotten a very little bit of writing done. I know exactly how this next scene goes, so there’s not much excuse. Except that, with a bit of help, I finally accomplished something I’d been trying to do for some time.

See, one of the things about living in an old house is, sometimes, old appliances. The washer and dryer are/were not less than 25 years old and probably closer to 30. The washer still works, with a couple of tweaks, but the dryer had given up the ghost more than a year ago. It’s okay. Clotheslines still work, in some ways better. (Well, except when it’s raining.) The mud room/utility room/pantry/laundry room is about 5 1/2 feet wide by roughly 11 feet long. And the dryer was smack in the middle of one long wall taking up 30 inches of the 5 1/2 foot width of the room. Bad enough when it was useful.

I wanted it out. But I couldn’t get the gas valve (which hadn’t been turned off probably since the dryer was installed) to budge. Finally had to ask for help. But it’s done now. The dryer is out. The washer stays, for now. But eventually I’ll replace it with a combination unit that is both washer and dryer. Still a bit of cleaning and reorganizing to do. (The only thing the dryer had been used for recently was a flat surface to put things on.) But that tiny room feels enormous with that beast out. And coming in the back door doesn’t feel nearly so crowded.

So, now, maybe I can stop fussing with trying to get that out and settle down to write. Hopefully.

Last year at about this time I was just coming to the end of the first draft of BECOME: TO CATCH THE LIGHTNING.

BecomeCover2

I didn’t finish the first draft until after Christmas and then I spent the next month (while the first manuscript cooled so I could look at it more critically) starting the first draft of BECOME: TO RIDE THE STORM.

That worked out pretty well. Revisions, critiques, and more revisions were finished on the first book by May and it was published by the end of that month. The first draft of the second was finished in July and now it’s available for pre-order and will be published on January 2nd. (At the limited-time pre-order price of only 99 cents until January 5th. And, by the way, the first book is also only 99 cents until then.)

But, it turns out, finishing up before Christmas just isn’t working out as well, especially when I’m trying to start not just a new book, but a new series. Too many distractions this time of year.

But I’m not going to let that stop me. I’m going to get at least some work done on MAGE STORM in the next couple of weeks. Maybe just not as much as I’d hoped.

Late post tonight, sorry. Busy day.

I’m going to have to work on rebuilding my momentum in BECOME: TO CATCH THE LIGHTNING . . .

. . . after being distracted for several days with the Amazon X-ray thing. I still think it’s a really good idea, at least for certain books.

For example, my DUAL MAGICS series. I mean, hopefully the readers will remember the core characters, and the ones that only turn up for one scene or a couple of closely related scenes shouldn’t be too much of an issue. But in four books there are some characters–and also some geographical features and magical terminology–that may not be referred to frequently but might come up repeatedly across the series. Having the ability to have a quick refresher of who or what that is sounds like a positive to me.

But it does take a long time to go through the list and provide some sort of reference–and remove all the things that shouldn’t need an explanation. Like, for instance, for some reason–probably because I capitalized it as part of a common name–Amazon’s default was to want to provide a reference for Forest and then offer a Wikipedia article. Not really what I had in mind. Then it’ll probably take me even longer to figure out which terms and places Amazon didn’t ask for a definition of. (Yeah, I’ve found a few already.)

And then there’s the boxed set, which is going to be more complicated because the reference I might want to give in the first book will necessarily be less complete than the one I would offer in the third book, but I’m not going to be able to split that up.

So this is the kind of thing that needs to be more of a background task. Something, maybe that I do while thinking about the next scene or something similar. And I need to get back to work on BECOME: TO CATCH THE LIGHTNING.
