Wow, I just realized that I completely forgot to post yesterday.

Real life just came up and hit me in the face yesterday. Taken care of now, more or less.

My only excuse for today is that it’s Thursday and it never occurred to me because I post on Wednesdays and Sundays.

So, to make this just a little writing related, I’m working my way back into WAR OF MAGIC, the fourth–and last–book of my DUAL MAGICS series. The brief hiatus was just what I needed I think. Both to recharge and to get a little distance.

I’m reworking the first few chapters right now because the beginning . . . just wasn’t working. This will be better. Then I can move forward.

At least around here, you never do know what you’ll find when you look in places you haven’t looked in a while. I’ve been searching for some craft materials I know I have. I actually organized my craft supplies (most of them) last year. No joy. I finally broke down and bought some more–which probably guarantees that I’ll find the stuff I already had soon.

But in my search, I turned up some things I don’t even remember. Like this:

Digital Camera

Not the best picture, I know. (It’s hard to get a decent photo of an unfinished piece of embroidery, especially really large or long ones. This is about 30 inches long.) But if you compare that to this:

dual-magics-bw-map2You’ll see that the first is an embroidered version of a much earlier rendering of the map for the world of the Dual Magics series.

Actually, that first map is for the first “novel” I ever wrote–way back in college. (Yes, some form of this story–or, at least, this world–has been bouncing around in my head that long.) That original story, however, took place a few hundred years into the future of the Dual Magics story–and involved another group of people living farther north, as you can see. And really wouldn’t fit into the current cannon.

I don’t even remember this piece of embroidery. It’s not quite finished, either. There’s a little bit of work left on the southern mountains. Maybe I decided I didn’t like it. Or put it aside to work on something else. Possibly, it was meant as a companion for this:

Digital Camera

which depicts elements of that same story I wrote back in college.

I’ve been doing so many other things today–laundry, a bit of house painting, and the first round of revisions on BEYOND THE PROPHECY

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????that I almost forgot to blog. In my defense, I’m at one of the most fun parts of the story, where two young characters are starting to feel the first urges of something more than friendship–and still don’t quite know what to do with that. To cap it off, one of them is about to go away for a while. Here’s a snippet:

“You are coming back aren’t you?” Kiara asked.

“Nothing could keep me away. This is my real home.”

“How . . . how long will it be?”

“I don’t know. Two years. Maybe three. I’ll study hard and try to make it back as soon as I can.” He looked down and back up. “Will you . . .” He stopped and shook his head. “It’s not fair to ask you to wait for me.”

“I’ll wait.”

Theklan smiled. “I . . . I made something for you. It’s not a courting gift. I’m not even allowed to offer a courting gift until after the manhood test. More . . . more maybe something to remember me by?”

Kiara smiled. “I’ll keep it for you.” The traditional reply to an accepted courtship gift. She looked around. “What is it?”

Theklan laughed. “It’s not here. I hid it in my bedroll. It’s a bridle with a pattern of lions and eagles worked on it.” Unaccountably, he blushed. “That’s what I wanted the berries for . . . that day. To make a dye to bring out the pattern.”

“Pity we lost them all.”

His eyes blazed as he looked into hers. “No. Vatar’s bringing a purple dye from Caere. That’ll be better. It’ll last longer and . . . the other would have been pinkish. That’s not really the right color for you. You’re more . . . vivid than that.”

Kiara sucked in a breath. Then she leaned forward and pressed her lips to his, just briefly. A promise for another time. In two or three years. When they were both ready. It would seem like a long time, but maybe it was better this way.

Unfortunately, all is not going to run smoothly for these two. Not for a while at least. But it’s still fun writing this.

I’ve started the first round of revisions on BEYOND THE PROPHECY. I’m all the way up to Chapter Five out of fifty-one, so I’m not exactly racing through it. In fact, I don’t expect to get anything done on it at all today. It’s just been one of those days. My alarm not going off was just the start.

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I usually like to try to get at least a chapter done a day, but Chapter Five has some particular issues that might take longer.

Meanwhile, I’ve been thinking.

About the ending of BEYOND THE PROPHECY, which I’m still not entirely thrilled with.

About the fourth and last (and so far untitled) book in the Dual Magics series. Especially about where it starts, which might be an issue. Because, as things stand, it would start with several chapters in which Vatar doesn’t have a part. Hmm.

And trying not to think about another story altogether which has started calling my name. Not yet! But DREAMER’S ROSE is starting to get awfully insistent. (It’s a riff on the myths and legends of Hercules, but reversed. Sort of.) So far, I’m just jotting down notes and hoping I can get away with that. I have to finish Dual Magics first. Really. (Wouldn’t be the first time I ended up working on two first drafts at the same time, though.)

And no, none of this is an April Fool’s joke.

First Item:

I am now officially a member of SFWA, Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Knock one item off the bucket list.

Second Item:

Daughter of the Disgraced King is now available for pre-order. It releases May 18th. I’m waiting for the print proof.

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Keep your head down. Don’t draw attention. Above all, don’t make yourself a target. Those are the rules seventeen-year-old Ailsa lives by. It’s just part of being the daughter of the disgraced ex-king and living too close to his more-than-slightly paranoid successor.

Ailsa isn’t the only one affected by the new king’s insecurities. The mages backed her father. Now the new king’s repressive policies drive the mages out of the kingdom–and with them the magic that her desert country desperately needs to survive. Ailsa sets out to study magic so she can help keep Far Terra green.

Her plans are nearly upset when her oldest friend, Crown Prince Savyon, proposes. Marrying him would mean giving up her magic. Her family history proves that the barons will never accept a mage as queen. A year of training won’t make her a mage—unless she has insanely powerful magic. And there’s been no sign of that. But at least she’ll know what she’d be giving up before she makes a decision.

A magic-tinted kiss from Jathan, her cheerfully annoying study partner, makes her question what she really feels for Savyon. She and Jathan could do great things together–except that he never wants to go near the desert.

Are magic and love forever mutually exclusive for Ailsa?

The ebook is only $0.99 during the pre-order.

Third Item:

I’m making good progress on “Modgud Gold”, the tie-in short story for the Dual Magics series. I’ve added a scene to the beginning and will add another to the ending to pull it together better. Right now, I’m tightening up the middle. Streamlining a bit. I expect to have it up in a week or two. Of course, I’ll have to redo the cover to match the new fonts on the Dual Magics covers.

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Probably should change the cover for “Becoming Lioness” while I’m at it. Make them all look like they belong together.

???????????????????????????????????????

“Becoming Lioness” is free just about everywhere.

In real life, one of my current projects is to organize that room. Just about every house has one. The room that doesn’t get used very often (maybe it’s a guest room) and so ends up being the place where you put anything you can’t find another place for–or things you just don’t want to week out, yet. In my case, it’s variously referred to as the back bedroom or the closet room. Somehow, no matter how many times I’ve tried to organize it, it always ends up looking like some giant has stirred it with a stick. I think there’s a poltergeist at work.

There are literally corners in that room I haven’t been able to get to for years. Not without a lot of work, anyway. I pulled a lot of stuff out of that room when I designated a portion of my new office space for crafts. Made sense to organize and store most of the craft supplies in one of the closets. That should make it easier to organize what’s left. Somehow, it seems to have had the opposite effect.

The thing is, you never quite know what you’re going to turn up when you start poking into corners like that. Among the things that have turned up are  very early versions of some stories that I later rewrote. (Must remember to shred those at some point. The writing is truly dreadful.) And an abandoned writing journal.

I knew that the characters and at least some of the events of the Dual Magics series had been kicking around in my head for a while. Now I know just how long a while. 1987. Yikes. Back then, I used to write long hand in spiral notebooks.

Of course, it’s not quite the same story now that it was then. It’s much better and richer than that early version.

After I abandoned the book as a writing journal, I apparently used it to write down impressions on at least one vacation. The last entry is:

Long way home. Fog, rain, pelicans.

Well, at least it’s not verbose. I must have been tired.

The Voice of Prophecy is living up to my dreams for it, so far. Thank you, all my wonderful readers.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????Meanwhile, I’m squeezing work on Book 3, Beyond the Prophecy in with the final Christmas preparations. There’s still a lot to do. Handmade gifts that still need to be finished. And I haven’t even started the baking, yet.

And, of course, there’ve been more than the usual number of Christmas fails.

Top of that list has to be the tree that I’d set up in my office. I really enjoyed having my own little Christmas tree in here while I write. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture of that tree, either before–or after. But it was basically like this one, but red rather than silver:

Digital CameraExcept, of course, it was decorated differently. This one had all the dog and cat ornaments and a handful of hummingbird ornaments on it. Yes, I said had. Thursday–one week before Christmas–I came home to find that tree on the floor. It had been set up on the auxiliary desk, which now looks like this:

Digital Camera(Having already cleared the space for it, I combed the Christmas closet for something else seasonal to put there after the disaster.)

Apparently, the base of the tree had cracked and wasn’t able to support the weight. Fortunately, only one hummingbird appears to be terminal–unless the other wing turns up somewhere, anyway.

Meanwhile, the projects. I’ve still got one of these to finish embroidering–and put that and another set of ornaments together.

Digital CameraThat’s doable. I’ve been putting together some little chain mail ornaments as a back up, just in case.

Digital Camera

The one that’s giving me real trouble is this one, which I’d intended as a gift. The problem is: it’s a non-standard size, so I haven’t been able to find a frame for it. Digital CameraI wasn’t worried. There is–or was–a very good art supply store in town. I figured I could always swing by and pick up some stretcher bars and make a frame. I’ve done it before. Only that store has recently moved–into a place that’s almost impossible to find at the back of an industrial park. (What were they thinking?) And they reduced their stock before the move. So . . . no stretcher bars. I may, possibly, be able to put it together as a throw pillow, if there’s time.

On the subject of Christmas fails, I thought I’d throw these two up, too, even though they’re from a couple of decades ago.

Digital CameraDigital CameraMy own designs. They probably don’t look bad enough to be called fails–until I tell you that “the softball” is about five inches in diameter and the “chinese lantern” is seven inches long. Yeah, they don’t really quite work on a Christmas tree.

Back to work.

The Voice of Prophecy is all set to release tomorrow.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????In celebration, The Shaman’s Curse will be free tomorrow only. So, if you haven’t read it, here’s your chance.

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????And now I’m beginning to build up momentum on the third book in the series, currently titled Beyond the Prophecy (subject to change, just like The Ignored Prophecy became The Voice of Prophecy).

I’m on the second scene of Chapter 11: Escape. (See how I just threw that title in there to pique your interest? Who’s escaping? And from what?) And I’m really excited about a couple of the upcoming chapters. So, full steam ahead–or at least as much as the demands of the season permit. I’ve got a couple of weeks off coming up, so I hopefully will make some real progress during that time. (Of course, there are some other projects around the house that need to get done–or at least started–during that time, too.)

Back to work, now. Well, after I take the dogs out, anyway.

The Voice of Prophecy is all ready to go.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????The final files have been uploaded for the Kindle version, which will release on December 15th. You can get it for only $0.99 during the pre-order.

Yesterday, I approved the proof for the print version. That will most likely be available from Amazon sometime this week (Wednesday to Friday).

So, this weekend, I’ve been taking a little time to decompress before diving back into Book 3, Beyond the Prophecy. (It always takes a few days to turn off the editor part of my brain so I can write a first draft again.)

Meanwhile, I’ve been working on the Christmas decorating.

Digital Camera

The pre-lit strand on this tree burned out. (Actually, it was the controller that used to make it do interesting effects.) I’ve supplemented for this year with what I had. For next year, I think I’ll get another rope light. I like the garland effect.

Many of those ornaments are hand made, either by me or my mother.

Btw, those are just empty boxes underneath. Just part of the decorations. The tree just always looks more finished with something under it.

Digital CameraThis little one sits in the corner next to the entertainment center. That’s actually also another (much shorter) rope light strand. I have no idea why it photographed that way. Notice the very old-style tree topper (in pink). That used to be on my Christmas tree when I was little. (My very own little tree in my room because that was the only way they could get me away from the lighted Christmas tree in the living room to put me to bed.)

Oh, and those stockings hanging next to it? Those were knitted for my brother and me for our first Christmases by a family friend. It’s all about tradition in this house.

Digital CameraThis fiber-optic tree sits on the other side of the entertainment center. (I love fiber optics.)

This is a good morning, despite the rain and the fact that I’m going to have to go out and stand in it in about an hour.

The pre-order for THE VOICE OF PROPHECY is working!

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

As of this morning, TVoP is #18 in Sword and Sorcery Hot New Releases, #23 in Epic Fantasy Hot New Releases, and #78 on the Amazon Best Sellers list for Sword and Sorcery.

This makes me very happy.

Also, I’ve finished the polishing edit. I just want to revisit a couple of chapters that required a little more than average revision and then I can upload the final file. So everything will be done well before Amazon’s deadline.

Then I can get back to work on the first draft of Book 3, BEYOND THE PROPHECY.

Also, the Clean Indie Reads Holiday Sale is still going on. THE SHAMAN’S CURSE is only $0.99 thru December 7th.
